WHAT IS BEAUTY?

I feel people that are really light-skinned get more attention than those of us who are 'tuntum black'.

Somewhere in December a very huge company was looking for a girl to be in an advert for them. A friend of mine suggested me and the question they asked her was, ''How fair is she?''. She then says, ''Oooh she is normal'' and their response was, ''We want a light-skinned girl''.

What the hell? What has complexion got to do with anything? It's absolute nonsense.

If a light-skinned person speaks Twi it amuses some Ghanaians, who seem to think the light-skinned person is an 'Obroni' of some sort. Being mixed race in particular is translated to mean you are very 'dadaba' or rich (SMH).

The problem is not really the fault of fair people. It's to do with Ghanaian attitudes and some kind of slave mentality about anything obroni being superior.

I remember that in primary school, if you were someone that was very black you got laughed at and called unpleasant names by some. Then again, lighter people probably get teased too: kids have a way of laughing at anyone who is different in anyway.

However, with Ghana being the country that it is, there are some light-skinned people who let all the extra attention get in their heads, which is also ridiculously annoying: is your blood mixed with gold?

I didn't write this post to offend light, really fair or mixed race people (if you are offended too bad. It's my opinion).

What is beauty?

  1. Its annoying how people compare dark skinned and light skinned smetimes but in reference to the TV advert, having worked with an advertising agency before, they would normally and the word is normally;opt for a light skinned person because of technical reasons. Being that they would use less light effects in shooting when they use a light skinned person as against a dark skinned person. But people should stop all the nonsense abt dark skinned and light skinned persons. Its total rubbish. Its intelligence that matters and not the colour of the skin.
